Welcome
This is a dynamic department with teachers who care and are extremely interested in your children and their education.  We come to work each day with a positive attitude and share that feeling with all our students.  We hope that you enjoy this introduction to our staff and curriculum. Grading:
Grading Policy - There are five major categories for grading in Physical Education. Grading is done each of the four marking periods with one marking period dedicated to Health. Additionally, there is a unit assessment each marking period to review the work covered.
Preparation - will be assessed on a daily basis throughout the marking period. Each unit is worth 30 points giving a student the chance to earn a total of 90 points.
* If a student does not dress, they cannot earn participation, skill, or fitness points for the day.
The following is the breakdown of points
0 days missed for dress= 90 points
1 day missed for dress= 80 points
2 days missed for dress= 70 points
3 days missed for dress= 60 points
4 days missed for dress= 50 points
5 days missed for dress= ***failure for the marking period**
 
Participation – will be assessed over 3 units per marking period - each day is worth 3 points, each unit is worth 45 points, giving a student the chance to earn a total of 135 points.

*Safety in regards to participation includes the removal of jewelry, gum and the appropriate use of equipment. Disregard for these rules and expectations will hinder a student’s ability to achieve the highest number of points
 
Skill - will be assessed over 3 units per marking period - each unit is worth 15 points giving a student the chance to earn a total of 45 points.

*up to two points can be added to skill grade to show improvement achieved during fitness. This will be shown on the student’s individual grading card.            
*comments will also be given in Powershool to notify the user of these points.
Fitness - will be assessed over the entire marking period and students can earn a total of 45 points based on the class rubric. The standards will be assessed many times throughout a marking period. Students can only improve upon their Fitness standards when tested. This score will not appear until the end of the marking period where the student has had several opportunities to improve.  
Written Assessment - students will also be given a written assessment at the end of each marking period to assess their knowledge of the completed units. A student can earn a maximum of 15 points for each assessment. Review sheets are available to the student prior to the exam and can also be found online.
 
HEALTH:
Health 7 - Familyforms, stress & violence & help for the family. Personality development, self-esteem & self image, decision making, six basic emotions, steroids, alcohol, smoking, marijuana & substance abuse, coping with anger, HIV/AIDS, current events and DARE.
Health 8 - Nutrition, eating disorders, Physical Fitness concepts, HIV/AIDS, alcohol, smoking, marijuana, substance abuse, steroids, Resolving conflicts & communication, analyzing media ads, DARE, & First Aid
Health 9 - Sexuality Education / Abstinence / Nutrition / Disease / Values / Decision-Making Alcohol & Drugs  
Health 10 - Driver Education Theory/NJ State Manual/NJ State Written Test/GDL Laws, Organ donation
Health 11- Current Health Issues / Media and our Culture / Mental and Emotional Health / Relationships, STI & Contraception /Alcohol & Drugs / Decision Making pertaining to young adults / Personal Safety and Sexual Assault
Health 12 - Relationships, Family Living / Reality works (babies) / Love / Marriage / Review of STI & Contraception / Alternate lifestyles
